Once, there was a General who wanted to cross a river. He was unsure of the depth of the river, and whether his horse could make it across the river.
He looked around for help and saw a little boy nearby. He asked the boy for advice.
The boy looked at the size of the General’s horse and paused for a moment. He then confidently told the General that it is safe for the General and his horse to cross the river.
The General proceeded to cross the river on his horse. As he approached the middle of the river, he suddenly realized that the river was, in fact, very deep, and he almost drowned.
After he recovered from his shock he shouted at the boy and threatened to punish him.
The boy was stunned and innocently replied, “But General, I see my ducks crossing the river everyday without any problem, and my ducks have shorter legs than your horse”.
Someone said that, “Advice/opinion is the cheapest commodity on earth”. What is good for others may not be for you. What worked for others may not work for you. What was relevant in past may not be now. What others are talking may have gaps in their knowledge. Counsel woven into the fabric of real life is wisdom. If you need advice/opinion, get it from people who are wise and know what they are talking about. They dip their tongue in wisdom and then give counsel. Then make sure you review for yourself both the situation you are in and the opinion/advice of others before you act on them. Seek opinion/advice but see whether it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. Never follow and act blindly. Also, there is no wrong listening to other people opinion if you can use their inexperience or gaps in their knowledge to your advantage without causing harm or loss to them.
Don't follow any advice, no matter how good, until you feel as deeply in your spirit as you think in your mind that the counsel is wise. - Joan Rivers
